Urgent Call for Accountability After 13-Year-Old Sal  Torres Assaulted Outside Ernest Lawrence Middle School

Chatsworth, CA — Outrage and demands for justice have erupted following a brutal attack on 13-year-old Sal’Vyion Torres, an 8th-grade student at Ernest Lawrence Middle School, on December 6, 2024. The assault, perpetrated by Muriel, a parent of another student, occurred at approximately 4:10 PM outside the school at 10100 Variel Ave, Chatsworth, CA.

Sal’Vyion walked out of his school to help a friends grandma put some belongings in her car. As he attempted to walk back inside the school to continue participating in the afternoon school program, Sal’Vyion became the victim of a racially charged attack that left him with severe injuries. The adult assailant not only hurled racial slurs, including the N-word, but physically assaulted the child by placing their knees on his neck. Sal’Vyion suffered a concussion, contusion, neck sprain, and a closed head injury. He is now on crutches due to the extent of his injuries.

A Failure to Protect

The incident has sparked outrage from Sal’Vyion’s family and the community, who are questioning the lack of safety measures and accountability at Ernest Lawrence Middle School.

“Our children deserve to feel safe at school, especially in programs designed to provide a supportive environment. Instead, my son was subjected to a horrific, racially motivated attack that could have ended his life. This should never happen to any child.”

Despite the presence of school administrators, including Principal Mr. Flores and Assistant Principal Mr. Randeros, concerns are being raised about how such an egregious failure in student protection occurred.

Demanding Justice

The family is calling for immediate action, including:

A thorough investigation into the assault and the circumstances leading up to it.

Accountability for the assailant, including criminal charges.

Enhanced safety protocols to protect students in after-school programs.

Support for Sal, including counseling and medical assistance.

“This isn’t just about my son—it’s about ensuring that no other child endures such trauma at the hands of an adult while under the supposed care of their school,” said Drina Torres ].

A Community United Against Hate

The attack on Sal’Vyion has united parents, educators, and community members in a demand for systemic change. Racism and violence have no place in schools or society, and this incident serves as a grim reminder of the work that remains to be done to protect children and promote equity.
